Grady sisters, 1890s
Delia and Annie Grady were born and raised in County Clare, Ireland, and emigrated separately to the United States. They both settled in Chicago. Both sisters valued education, as shown by the books they are holding in the photo.

Annie married James McInerney and is shown with her family in the photo at right.

McInerney Family about 1911, courtesy of Nancy
The James McInerney family about 1911. James died in 1914, leaving Annie to support and raise their three children. When she asked about public assistance, she was told that she'd have to sell her house to qualify. Annie was not about to lose her house, so she applied for a job with the US Post Office. Because she was over 40, Annie took five years off her age to make herself more attractive as an employee. This is reflected in the US census: Annie is listed as 36 in 1910 but only 40 in 1920. Annie worked for the post office for more than 30 years.
